Adventure Tours in Žabljak

The highest town in the Balkans, sitting at 1,456 m on the doorstep of Durmitor — your basecamp for the wildest mountains in Montenegro.

Žabljak is the highest town in the Balkans, perched at 1,456 metres on the high plateau at the heart of the Durmitor massif. For us, it is less a town than a launch pad: from its handful of streets and timber chalets you can be roped up on limestone, chest-deep in a glacial canyon, or rafting Europe's deepest gorge within the hour. If you want one address from which to reach the best of Montenegro's mountains, this is it — and the activities on its doorstep run the full gauntlet from gentle to genuinely serious. Start with the Durmitor hiking tours, then build out toward Nevidio canyoning, Tara rafting and ski touring in winter.

What's on the doorstep is the national park itself: 39 peaks above 2,000 metres, 18 glacial lakes and the Black Lake (Crno Jezero) a flat 20-minute walk from the centre. A little further — a short drive west and north — lie the Komarnica gorge that hides Nevidio, the Tara put-ins, and the bouldering and crag climbing scattered across the plateau. Žabljak gives you alpine air, real silence at night and everything within reach by morning.

Getting to Žabljak

Žabljak sits in northern Montenegro and is best reached by road. From Podgorica the drive is roughly two and a half to three hours via Mojkovac and the E65 — the scenic route through the Tara Canyon adds time but is worth every minute. Most international visitors fly into Podgorica or into Tivat on the coast; from Tivat allow around three and a half to four hours, climbing steadily from sea level to the plateau. There is no airport at Žabljak, so plan on a hire car or a transfer — once you are up here, distances to the trailheads, put-ins and crags are short, and our guides meet you in town. Roads can be snowbound in deep winter, so check conditions before a January drive.

When to visit

The plateau has two clear seasons. From late June to early October the hiking and canyoning come into their own: the snow has cleared the high passes, the Komarnica is low enough for Nevidio to open, and the long days suit the bigger Bobotov Kuk traverses. July and August are warmest but busiest; September is our quiet favourite, with stable weather and empty trails. Tara rafting peaks for whitewater in the spring snowmelt and settles into family-friendly grades through summer. Then winter flips the script: with snow cover lasting around 120 days a year, Žabljak becomes a touring base for the slopes of Durmitor and neighbouring Sinjajevina from January to March.

At 1,456 metres, Žabljak doesn't ask you to drive to the adventure — the adventure is already outside the door.

Where it fits in your trip

Žabljak is the natural anchor for any active itinerary in the north. Use it as a two- or three-night base and you can string a hike, a canyon and a raft into a single long weekend. Read our Durmitor hiking guide before you arrive, study the Nevidio canyon guide if the gorge is on your list, and when you're ready to widen the trip, pair Žabljak with the wider Durmitor National Park tours or drop west to Plužine above Piva Lake for via ferrata and rafting. Whatever you choose, our certified guides handle the logistics, the safety equipment and the local knowledge — you bring the appetite.
