FAQ · Climbing

Do I need experience for rock climbing?

No — guided beginner sessions teach you everything, provide all the gear and start you on easy, well-protected routes.

Rock climbing has a reputation for being the preserve of the super-fit and fearless. In reality it is one of the most beginner-friendly adventure sports when you go with a guide — and most people are surprised how much they can climb on day one.

On a guided sport-climbing taster, your instructor manages the ropes from the ground, so you simply focus on moving up the rock. You will learn to tie in, trust the equipment and use your feet — climbing is far more about balance and footwork than arm strength. All gear, including shoes, harness, rope and helmet, is provided, and routes are chosen to match your level. Want to know where and when? See our complete climbing guide and best month to climb.

More beginner climbing questions

Do I need experience for rock climbing?

No. Guided beginner climbing sessions in Montenegro start from zero — your guide teaches you how to tie in, belay, move on rock and trust the equipment, then puts you on easy, well-protected routes. All gear, including shoes, harness, rope and helmet, is provided.

What is the easiest way to start climbing in Montenegro?

Book a guided sport-climbing taster on bolted routes near Podgorica, Plužine, Kolašin or Bar. The guide manages the ropes from the ground so you can focus on climbing, and you can try several grades in a half-day to see how far you progress.

How fit do I need to be to try climbing?

Average fitness is plenty for beginner routes. Climbing is more about balance, footwork and technique than raw strength, and a good guide picks routes that match your level. You will use your legs far more than your arms once you learn to stand on your feet.

Can children try rock climbing?

Yes. With a guide, children from around 7–8 can enjoy easy bolted routes and bouldering on a top rope, using kids' harnesses and shoes. Sessions are kept short, playful and confidence-building, with safety managed entirely by the instructor.
