Is deep water solo safe?
Over deep, obstacle-free water with a guide checking depth and landings, deep water solo is a thrilling low-gear way to climb.
Deep water solo (DWS, or psicobloc) is rope-free climbing above deep water — the water itself is your safety net. It feels bold because it is, but the risk is managed by where and how you climb, not by luck.
Safety comes down to three things: deep enough water, a clean landing zone free of rocks, and climbing within sensible height limits. In Montenegro a guide assesses each spot for depth and obstacles, caps the height, and supervises every fall so you learn to drop feet-first and relaxed. Because every fall ends in the water, you must be a confident swimmer able to get back to the exit. Curious how it compares to roped climbing? Read our deep water solo guide.
