FAQ · Canyoning

Is canyoning safe?

Yes — with certified guides, the right equipment and small groups, canyoning is a low-risk adventure.

Canyoning looks wild — rappelling down waterfalls, jumping into pools, sliding over polished rock — but it is one of the most controlled adventure sports there is when run properly. The danger people imagine comes from doing it untrained and alone; the reality of a guided trip is methodical, briefed and equipped.

In Montenegro, our canyoning guides are trained mountain-rescue professionals. Every guest wears a wetsuit, helmet and harness, descends on doubled ropes, and follows a safety briefing before entering the canyon. Guides watch the weather closely and will reschedule rather than enter a canyon at risk of flash flooding. If you are new to it, start with a beginner canyon like Drenoštica near Budva before stepping up to Nevidio or Škurda.

FAQ

More about canyoning safety

Is canyoning safe?

Yes. With certified guides, correct equipment and small groups, canyoning is a low-risk adventure sport. In Montenegro our guides are trained mountain-rescue professionals who manage every rappel and jump, choose routes to match conditions and the group, and brief you fully before you enter the canyon.

What are the main risks of canyoning?

The real hazards are cold water, slippery rock and rising water after heavy rain. These are controlled with wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, doubled ropes, group-size limits and constant weather monitoring — guides will reschedule rather than enter a canyon in flood risk.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to go canyoning?

You should be comfortable in water and able to swim a short distance, but you are always wearing a buoyant wetsuit and a helmet, and guides position themselves at every pool and jump. Non-swimmers should tell their guide so the route can be adapted.

Can beginners go canyoning safely?

Absolutely. Canyons such as Drenoštica and Međureč are ideal for first-timers, and even technical canyons like Nevidio and Škurda are run safely with beginners when guided. No prior experience is required — just reasonable fitness and a willingness to follow instructions.
